Stuart and Valerie Merrill and their family have been missionaries for more than a decade  They currently minister in Nikapol, Ukraine.

What Happened:

Thursday (11/06/08) Dad and Andrew were working at the Church building in Nikapol, Ukraine. Dad was on the roof and apparently sensed something happening. He was sitting down with his arms wrapped around something when they found him.

They got him off the roof and to the hospital where, to my knowledge, it was confirmed that he had a Hemorrhagic stroke. He is responsive but cannot speak. He recognizes everyone and has not lost all ability to move. A CT scan revealed that a blood vessel had burst on the left side of his brain.

Current Situation:

Stuart, Valerie, and family currently reside in Des Moines, IA where Stuart continues to recover.  Physically he has recovered probably 90% of the way.  He is struggling with speech, but making good progress.  He is able to communicate well but struggles with coming up with the right words.  Pray as this can be frustrating and will simply require time and practice.

Hey. I’m one of Kaylona’s pen pals from Dallas TX. I just wanted you guys to know that I am praying for Stewart. I am praying that God’s healing power will be at work in his body and that he will have a swift recovery. I have all of my family and friends praying for him as well. May God be with y’all during this hard time. I can understand the emotions that you must feel right now. When I was little, my dad almost died from Chron’s disease. God performed a miracle and he’s alive and well today.

  9. Rafael Moreno says:

The Tenth Street Church of Christ in NYC has been praying for brother Stuart and his wife, and family, and all that know him wherein he labors for the Lord, since we got news of his plight. We are sad, and we are frightened even, but we know that God is greater than our circumstances (Romans 8:28; Philippians 4:12). May He bless you and all concerned with His grace, peace and strengtj (2 Thessalonians. 1:2; Philippians 4:6-7). We love you dearly brother Stuart and sister Valerie. Stay strong in Him (Ephesians 6:10; 1 Chronicles 16:11).

“Jesus does his best work at such moments. Just when the truth about life sinks in, his truth starts to surface. He takes us by the hand and dares us not to sweep the facts under the rug but to confront them with him at our side.” — Max Lucado

    In His Love,
    Bro. Rafael Moreno

I go to church with Justin & Lydia (Indianola Church of Christ)…I enjoy the updates on Stuart..Some years ago my husband had a stroke after open heart surgery. We were snowbird in Texas at the time…So I feel your joy every time I read the updates and it brings back memories. I remember they had my husband balance a check book..His time ran out in rehab so they said he could finish it in his room and they gave me the answer to check him out…he had a different answer than what I had on my paper…In checking he was correct hers had an error. He could hardly wait to go to rehab the next day and let her know SHE WAS WRONG. We are praying for your family.
